About YONN
Yorubas of Nottingham Nottinghamshire (YONN) is a socio-cultural Association of Yorubas people living, working, and studying in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. The Association was formed with the primary purpose of bringing together all Yorubas in Nottingham & Nottinghamshire and its environs.
The Association is not a political or a religious group. It is formed to foster unity and peace among the Yorubas in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
The Association promotes the welfare and well-being of its members who are sons and daughters of Oduduwa.
Formation
The formation of the Yorubas of Nottingham Nottinghamshire (YONN) started through a series of family meetings of its foundation members which commenced during the summer of the year 2015. This was followed by creating a Facebook Page and a Facebook Group in October 2015. With the great determination of its foundation members, the Association was formally registered with the Companies House in August 2016 as The Yorubas of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire (TYCANN).
Launching
The Association was formally launched with funfair and pageantry on Saturday 3rd September 2016. The glamorous event took place at the Kashmir Conference & Banqueting Centre, Nottingham.
Rebranding
The Association was rebranded in the spring of 2021 in order to serve its members better and also to more accurately reflect its vision, mission and scope of activities. The rebranding of the Association officially took effect on Monday 1st March 2021 when its name was changed from The Yoruba Community of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire (TYCANN) to Yorubas of Nottingham Nottinghamshire (YONN). This was immediately effected at the Companies House on Tuesday 2nd March 2021. The Association also redesigned its logo as part of the rebranding. Most importantly, the Association separated the executive arm of its management from the Board of Directors, in which case, separate sets of individuals occupy the positions of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. The Executives Election was conducted on the 9th – 10th August 2021 which brought to power the first Executive Committee of the Association.
