In a momentous celebration of diversity and perseverance, the Yorubas of Nottingham Nottinghamshire (YONN) joins the Nottingham city and citizens in applauding Councillor Patience Ifediora, who has been elected as Nottingham’s first-ever female Lord Mayor of African heritage. The historic appointment, confirmed at the City Council’s Annual General Meeting on Monday, 12 May 2025, marks a groundbreaking milestone for representation and community pride in Nottingham.
Cllr Ifediora, a beloved advocate for the Aspley ward and a longtime supporter of YONN’s cultural initiatives, has shattered yet another glass ceiling, cementing her legacy as an icon and trailblazer for future generations. Her election not only reflects her unwavering dedication to public service but also embodies the vibrant, inclusive spirit of a city that thrives on unity.

“Today, We Make History Again”
The Council Chamber erupted in applause as Cllr Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, hailed the moment as a triumph for the entire community. “With this nomination, we are poised to elect Nottingham’s first councillor of African background as Lord Mayor,” she declared. “That matters. Not just to Patience—but to all of us.”
Cllr Khan emphasized Nottingham’s identity as a city “of inclusion, of community, a city that values everyone,” adding, “At a time when too many seek to divide, today, we stand together.”
A Journey of Firsts
Cllr Ifediora’s ascent to the Lord Mayor’s office is the latest in a series of historic achievements. In 2015, she became the first African woman elected to Nottingham City Council. Four years later, she broke barriers again as the first African councillor appointed Sheriff of Nottingham, followed by her pioneering role as the first woman vice-chair of the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2022.
Her journey resonates deeply with Nottingham’s African and Yoruba communities, who have long seen her as a beacon of hope. A familiar face at YONN events, Cllr Ifediora has consistently championed cultural exchange, youth empowerment, and grassroots collaboration. From lively cultural festivals to educational workshops, her presence has underscored a commitment to uplifting every voice in the city.
YONN: “A Lover of the Community Rises”
For YONN, Cllr Ifediora’s election is a moment of profound pride. As a socio-cultural association dedicated to preserving Yoruba heritage and fostering unity, YONN has witnessed firsthand her passion for bridging communities. “Cllr Ifediora isn’t just a leader—she’s family. Whether in physical attendance at YONN events or advocating for inclusive policies, she has always shown that leadership is about connection. Her story is a testament to what’s possible when talent meets opportunity.
A Lord Mayor for All
In her inaugural address, Cllr Ifediora pledged to prioritize “unity, compassion, and action” during her 2025–26 term. “Nottingham’s strength lies in its people,” she said. “From Aspley to Arnold, we are one city. Together, we’ll build a future where no one is left behind.”
As she steps into the role, succeeding Cllr Carole McCulloch, the city anticipates a tenure marked by the same vigour she brought to the Sheriff’s office and fire service. Her agenda will no doubt focus on youth engagement, community safety, and amplifying underrepresented voices.
